Steven Spielberg is giving the long-form story television treatment to his 2002 film Minority Report that starred Tom Cruise. The legendary director has hired Godzilla writer Max Borenstein to transform the film’s concept into a television series to be produced by Amblin Television.
Spielberg is generally known as a film guy, but consistently has his hands in TV projects such as the numerous HBO World War II projects (Band of Brothers and The Pacific), as well as satisfying his sci-fi itch with shows like Falling Skies and Extant. Borenstein is currently finishing work on Skull Island, the King Kong prequel for Legendary.
The 2002 film based on the Philip K. Dick novel was a hit, albeit not a monstrous one, and in my opinion was a brilliant film a bit ahead of its time. The show will focus on the “PreCrime” special unit of the police that uses three “precogs,” or psychics, to predict crimes before they happen until the lead character is predicted to commit murder, causing him to go on the run.
The Wrap is reporting that Spielberg is looking to cast a name in the role that Tom Cruise originated in the film, much like the way they cast Halle Berry in Extant. No network is chosen at this time, but surely if Spielberg and big name actor are attached to a property with this kind of recognition, the bidding will be high.
