Netflix Hires Cheo Hodari Coker as Luke Cage Showrunner

With Netflix’s first Marvel series, Daredevil, only a few short weeks away, the streaming network is already looking ahead to the future. Variety reports that Cheo Hodari Cokerhas been tapped as the showrunner for Luke Cage, and that he’ll also serve as executive producer for the “street-hero series” starring Mike Colter (American Horror Story: Coven) in the leading role.

Cheo Hodari Coker has multiple television writing and producing credits on shows like Ray Donovan, Almost Human, and Southland and will also write the first two episodes of Luke Cage. His feature film credits include Fox Searchlight’s rap biopic Notorious, and he also penned the book Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of The Notorious B.I.G.

With that resume, it definitely sounds like Coker has the cred to pull off a “street-hero” based series. He will also get to work with a generally blank canvas, due to Luke Cage not being very well known outside of comic fanboy circles, and never previously being featured in any kind of high profile live-action appearance.

Cage will eventually take part in Netflix’s team-up series Marvel’s The Defenders,  which will see him joining forces with the other Marvel heroes being introduced in their own shows, including: Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and an Iron Fist role that hasn’t been cast at this time.

Luke Cage will air on Netflix sometime in 2016.
