With so many casting rumors surrounding Star Wars: Episode VII, it’s difficult to get excited when we hear a new name being added to the mix. But admittedly, this one is a bit more intriguing than most: according to Variety, Girls star Adam Driver is close to inking a deal to play the villain, a role said to be “in the vein of the iconic Darth Vader.”
Apparently, Driver has been at the top of the list for some time, but the studio was concerned that shooting on Episode VII, as well as additional Star Wars films, might conflict with his Girls schedule at HBO. But sources tell Variety that those issues have been ironed out, and an official announcement from Disney and Lucasfilm could be coming in the next few days.
Filming is set to begin at London’s Pinewood Studios in April, so we have to assume that director J.J. Abrams is beginning to finalize his casting decisions. With Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher expected to return in significant roles, all eyes are on possible franchise newcomers, many of whom will likely have to begin training for the film.
Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.
