Zack Whedon takes the helm in this limited 6-part series, which follows Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of the infamous Firefly class 03-K64 ship.
The cover will immediately catch your eye as Dan Dos Santos puts his own touch into illustrating the characters. This is continued throughout the pages penciled by Georges Jeanty (who has also done a variant cover for the first issue) and inked by Karl Story. If Jeanty sounds a little familiar he should, he has also worked on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Seasons 8 & 9 comic books as well as numerous others.
While the characters resemble those of the series, there is enough of his own hand in it to set them apart, as well. Overall, it’s successful, however there was some occasional confusion as to which character was actually in the panel.
[If you have not seen the show or film there are minor spoilers ahead… Also go see the damn source material. You’re missing out!]
Preview Page – Serenity: Leaves in the Wind #1
Thanks to Mal, the word is out that Reavers were actually a botched experiment carried out by The Alliance on a secret planet called ‘Miranda.’ There is worry that a new resistance is forming and must be quashed sooner rather than later. Unknown to the general public is that The Alliance knows who leaked this material, they just don’t know where the crew of Serenity is hiding.
As you would think, Serenity is laying low given its current situation. Mal and friends are a little bruised and broken. Floating through the ‘Verse, they are unsure of where to go or what to do. Whedon eventually gives them a purpose and really captures the charm of Firefly. When the people on his ship need him, Malcolm Reynolds is a man of action.
Between the events taking place regarding the Reaver fallout and what some might say is a surprise ending, Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1 does an excellent job of bridging the gap between the television series and the end of the feature film which is sure to get fans turning the pages in the issues to come. I would definitely place it in my ‘Shiny’ category as a must read and can’t wait to see where it goes.
