What We Know About Stranger Things Season 5

Although Stranger Things won’t be back on Netflix for a while, work is already underway on the fifth and final season.

With various delays affecting the production schedule, fans are eager for updates. Here’s a comprehensive look at what’s been revealed so far, including storylines, casting, and some intriguing scene setups. Keep an eye out for more information as it becomes available!

Scripts and Storylines

On Stranger Things Day in 2022, Netflix announced that the opening episode of Season 5 will be titled “Chapter One: The Crawl,” penned by series creators Matt and Ross Duffer. Actor Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, shared that he received three scripts prior to the end of the WGA strike, indicating significant progress on the season.

According to the Duffers, Will will take a central role in this season, focusing on his emotional journey. Ross Duffer explained that Will’s growth isn’t just about his sexuality; it’s about his development into a young man, moving beyond being the protected, introverted character he’s been portrayed as.

Schnapp reflected on how this understanding will influence his performance, saying, “I will be fully aware of who I am,” which excites him for the new material.

The writers have teased that Season 5 will blend elements from both the first and fourth seasons in an exciting way.

They also revealed the first line from the season’s opening scene, which hints at a mysterious and nostalgic moment involving a child’s voice singing a familiar tune—potentially recalling Will’s past experiences in the Upside Down.

Casting

While many of the main cast members are expected to return, including Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, and David Harbour, it has been confirmed that Linda Hamilton will join the cast in a new role. Details about her character are still under wraps.

Directing

Dan Trachtenberg, known for directing 10 Cloverfield Lane, will helm an episode of the final season. While it’s not yet clear which episode he will direct, Shawn Levy, a frequent collaborator and executive producer, is likely to return behind the camera as well.

Scene Preparation

Previsualization for the season has begun, and while actors aren’t currently working, the writers have shared some humorous GIFs and clips online to showcase their progress. They’ve playfully indicated the challenges of production while awaiting resolution of negotiations with SAG-AFTRA.

The Duffer brothers even shared a fun video imagining scenes with Funko figures, adding a light-hearted touch to the process.

Filming and Production

Filming for Season 5 resumed in January 2024 after the conclusion of the strikes. The Duffers have been sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses, including a recent photo featuring characters Lucas and Max in a hospital scene, highlighting the emotional stakes of the season.

Netflix also provided fans with a behind-the-scenes look during a special event, featuring cast members guiding two fans through the set, showcasing props and costumes.
