Things were touch and go for a bit there, but Legendary and Guillermo del Toro have now made the offiicial announcement that Pacific Rim 2 is drift compatible with a 2017 release date. Not only is there the big screen sequel on the way, but also announced is an animated series that del Toro is developing that will come out before the sequel hits theaters.
Here’s the official word on Pacific Rim 2:
Guillermo del Toro returns to direct Legendary Pictures’ PACIFIC RIM 2, the next chapter of the epic action-adventure he created with 2013’s hit original film. Zak Penn will write the script with del Toro. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni once again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX 3D.
Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand) will be writing the script, while the original film’s screenwriter Travis Beacham will be working on the overall “franchise development.” Sounds like he’ll be on Joss Whedon duty for the Pacific Rim universe.
One interesting behind the scenes aspect that will change for the sequel is the departure of Warner Bros. involvement. The studio passed on the sequel to their 2013 film and Universal was happy to step in and take up the slack with Legendary.
Want more info on what characters del Toro expects to be back in the sequel and his ideas on where things will go? Look no further than this video with the man himself:
I can’t say this is the most necessary sequel ever announced, but I am excited about the prospect of revisiting that world. How do you top the scale of the first one? Bigger robots? More Monsters? We’ll find out when Pacific Rim 2 is released on April 7th, 2017.
