We’ve been anxiously awaiting our first look at footage from Jurassic World for what seems like an eternity, and now the moment is finally here. Universal has just released the first Jurassic World trailer, and the park is open. It’s time to go back to the island. Thanks to Universal’s YouTube channel for this trailer.
All in all, this is a pretty solid piece of marketing. The first half of the trailer evokes the same sense of awe and wonder as the original Jurassic Park footage, but also establishes that this has moved far beyond the dreams of an eccentric billionaire and into the realm of sheer, unadulterated tourism. The park is a fully functional attraction, complete with a feeding show in a huge amphitheater which seems like it could be taking place at Sea World.
But behind the scenes, we learn that the park’s team of geneticists have experimented to create a hybrid dinosaur, a highly intelligent predator that stands nearly 40 feet high. “Probably not a good idea,” Chris Pratt’s character mutters, and when the creature escapes, it jeopardizes the lives of everyone on the island. With the new dinosaur (rumored to be called the D-Rex) on the loose, Pratt is tasked with hunting her down – and judging from that final shot, he may have a little bit of assistance. Also – how awesome is that piano rendition of the John Williams score from the original Jurassic Park?
With a little more than half a year left before the film hits theaters, it’s a pretty safe bet that there’s plenty more we haven’t seen yet. For starters, we don’t really get a look at the D-Rex here – sure, that might be its claws and feet in the chase sequence, but we don’t know for sure. And while this Jurassic World trailer is filled with plenty of “wow” moments, director Colin Trevorrow (who also co-wrote the film) is also well-versed in the art of character development and establishing meaningful relationships. Chances are, there’s a more emotional side to this film that we won’t see for awhile.
In the meantime, there’s more than enough here to get excited about. With a cast that also includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, and BD Wong, Jurassic World opens on June 12, 2015.
