Mel Gibson’s personal troubles may have cast a shadow on his film career, but the actor and director has been working to rehabilitate his public image over the past few years. Whether his decision to step behind the camera for the first time in a decade is part of that rehabilitation process is anyone’s guess, but his latest offering, the WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge, seems poised to make a significant impact during awards season.
Based on the true story of Desmond Doss, the film stars starring Andrew Garfield as a soldier whose religious beliefs compel him to refuse carrying a weapon of any sort during the conflict, and whose valiant efforts as a medic saved the lives of countless fellow soldiers. In 1945, Doss became the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Hacksaw Ridge opens on November 4.
HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
