The 87th Annual Academy Awards ceremony is just over a month away, and early this morning Chris Pine, J.J. Abrams, Alfonso Cuarón and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the 2015 Oscar Nominations from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman are tied at 9 nominations each, with The Theory of Everything tailing close behind with 8 nominations. Eight films were nominated for the Best Picture category.
On the other end of the spectrum, The Lego Movie didn’t secure a nomination for Best Animated Film, which is more than a little disappointing. Selma and Nightcrawler were also left out in the cold, with the former only being recognized in the Best Picture and Best Original Song category, and the latter grabbing only a single nomination for Best Original Screenplay. And while Gone Girl secured a much-deserved Best Actress nod for Rosamund Pike, it’s notably absent from the Best Picture and Best Director categories.
