Just days after Supergirl producer Sarah Schechter said “soon” when we asked her at Comic-Con when fans would get the first look at actor Tyler Hoechlin in the S-shield and red cape as Superman, here we are posting the first official image.
Feast your eyes on Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) together for the first time in the CW’s DC Television universe:
Warner Bros TV has pretty much nailed every major costume they’ve created for its numerous shows Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl and this rendition of Superman is no different. It perfectly fits in with the rest of the superhero outfits and also manages to have a distinct look when compared to Kara/Supergirl’s suit – the bright yellow in the S-shield really pops in this version of the suit too. The costume also has what appears to be some neat looking armor plating, envoking The New 52 version of Kal-El/Superman’s suit.
As for Hoechlin himself, he looks pretty solid debuting the first look at this version of The Last Son of Krypton – although I’m not a huge fan of the expression on his face they chose to go with in this shot. Additionally, I may be spoiled by Henry Cavill’s muscle-bound Supes, but I wish Hoechlin was a bit bulkier looking in the costume. Although, that’s not a huge deal as the portrayal is more important than the muscle, and it can always be explained away that his strength is from yellow sunlight, not muscles, similar to Kara.
Either way, it’s extremely nice to see DC loosening the reigns on their big characters and allowing different versions to exist on the big and small screen. Hoehclin will debut as Superman in National City in the first two episodes of Supergirl Season 2, starting October 10 on The CW.
