The Fast and Furious franchise could easily have wrapped things up with its seventh installment, which served as a very fitting tribute to the late Paul Walker, who passed away in a tragic accident during production. But the series has become one of the most viable moneymakers in Hollywood, so Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the crew are back next year for The Fate of the Furious.
Check out the first trailer for the eighth film in the franchise below.
Throughout production, I’ve been curious about the ways this film might shake things up, and this trailer doesn’t disappoint. The idea of Dom (Diesel) betraying the rest of his “family” and setting up a revenge tale is a lot of fun, especially since it also creates an excuse for Jason Statham to get back into the mix. And the addition of Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren (the latter of whom doesn’t appear in this footage) should hopefully bring plenty of opportunity for less male-driven action.
With a returning cast that also includes Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Kurt Russell and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, The Fate of the Furious opens in theaters on April 14, 2017.
Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.
From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.
