Stephen King’s epic fantasy series The Dark Tower has enjoyed a long and complicated road to the big screen, changing directors, studios and cast members almost too many times to count. But the wait is almost over, and in just over three months the world of Roland Deschain will finally be seen on the big screen.
Idris Elba stars the the last gunslinger, on a lifelong quest to find The Dark Tower, which acts as the nexus of multiple realms. He joins forces with a young boy named Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) to combat the sinister Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), who wants to destroy the tower and the worlds connected to it.

Fans of the book series will notice that there are elements from several of the novels in this footage, along with plenty of new material. The Dark Tower is both an adaptation of the source material, and a sequel to those stories – which definitely sounds weird on the surface, but makes sense if you’re familiar with the lore. Also, keep your eyes peeled for a couple of nice Easter eggs that fans of King’s other work will appreciate.
The Dark Tower opens in theaters on August 4.
Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) is a young 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), who is on a quest to reach the ‘Dark Tower’ that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save Mid-World from extinction. But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.
