It’s been an excruciatingly long wait, but now that Rogue One‘s theatrical run is in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look to the future of the Star Wars franchise. During a panel at Star Wars Celebration this morning, the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was unveiled by director Rian Johnson, and you can check it out right here.
Much like the first look at The Force Awakens, this trailer is heavy on atmosphere while revealing almost nothing about the plot of the film – which is exactly what fans would expect. That sense of discovery is one of the biggest joys of being a Star Wars fan, and no doubt Disney and Lucasfilm will continue to keep the marketing ambiguous so audiences can discover the film’s secrets in theaters.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi picks up momenta after the end of the previous installment, with Rey (Daisy Ridley) locating the reclusive Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The footage certainly indicates that she will begin training under the former Jedi master, but Luke’s voiceover here is troubling: “it’s time for the Jedi to end.” It should be interesting to explore the events that have transpired over the last 30 years that have caused Luke to arrive at this conclusion.
John Boyega, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac are also glimpsed briefly in the trailer, and we can expect most of the Force Awakens cast to reprise their roles as well, including Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Dohmnall Gleeson and the late Carrie Fisher. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theaters on December 15.
