With so much hype surrounding the upcoming release of The Avengers, the public at large may have forgotten that Marvel is about to begin production on Iron Man 3, with Shane Black directing from a script he co-wrote. Now we’re hearing rumors surrounding the film’s plot, as well as the appearance of a classic villain.
Latino Review claims to have an insider scoop that the film will borrow heavily from the critically acclaimed Extremis arc, a six-issue miniseries written by Warren Ellis that details Tony Stark’s attempts to replicate the Super Solider serum using military nanotechnology. Stark eventually undergoes the treatment himself in order to face off against a dangerous villain – which could be alluded to in the Avengers teaser trailer when Rogers says to Stark, “Big man in a suit of armor. Take that away, and what are you?”
If this is, indeed, the direction that Black intends to go with Iron Man 3, Mandarin seems to be a likely candidate for the central antagonist – Marvel readers will know that he eventually procured the Extremis tech and used it as a biological weapon. Mandarin’s appearance in the Iron Man franchise has been hinted at since the original film, with the appearance of the Ten Rings terrorist organization, and previous director Jon Favreau had discussed his interest in featuring Mandarin in a future film on more than one occasion.
We’ll continue to keep you posted on Iron Man 3 as more information becomes available.
