Plenty of criticism has been levied against Marvel for their lack of female-led films, but that’s scheduled to change with 2018’s Captain Marvel, the studio’s first flick to be headlined by a female superhero. And a new rumor suggests that Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron might be a candidate for the role.
The duo are even hoping to work together on Captain Marvel, the comic giant’s upcoming first female-led superhero film.
The source said: “Marvel has been courting Angie to direct the project and Charlize is a clear fan favourite for the starring role. If Charlize were to get the part, Angie would almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal.”
While this may sound a bit like a stretch, it’s worth mentioning that the folks at Collider reported last month that Jolie was “definitely under consideration” to direct Captain Marvel. So if that portion of the rumor holds true, could there be some truth to the rest?
With Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron exhibited a perfect blend of charisma and ass-kickery that would make her an ideal candidate to headline a superhero flick. She’s also incredibly versatile, and could bring plenty of gravitas to the role, if Marvel is indeed willing to give her a look.
Captain Marvel already has a pair of writers attached, including Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman, so it shouldn’t be long before a finished draft comes in and the pieces start falling into place. We’ll let you know as we hear more.
Captain Marvel is scheduled to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
