Robin Williams Dies at 63, Police Confirm Suicide


UPDATED 8/12/2014: The Marin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed today that Robin Williams died from asphyxia after hanging himself with a belt in his California home. Time reports that Williams was discovered by his assistant. Original story follow.

ORIGINAL: The entertainment world was rocked today with the news that Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead in his California home. Williams, who was 63, was found “unconscious and not breathing” by Marin County police officers responding to a 911 call. He was pronounced dead by emergency personnel after they arrived on the scene.

While an official cause of death has not been determined, an official statement says “the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia.” The actor’s publicist confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Williams had been undergoing treatment for depression.

A medical examination and press conference are scheduled for Tuesday morning. We’ll update this post with more information as it become available.
