First look at Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained.’

Production for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained has been underway for awhile, and while there have been a few minor leaks, we’ve yet to see anything substantial. Until today, that is – Entertainment Weekly has scored the first official photos from the film, which reveal Leonardo DiCaprio as the villainous Calvin Candie, “a deranged plantation owner who likes to make his toughest slaves fight to the death in gladiatorial combat.”

We also have a nice shot of Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, who plays German dentist-turned-bounty-hunter Dr. King Schultz, and leading man Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave recruited by the good doctor to help extract revenge from some old enemies, which puts the duo on a collision course with Candie. Foxx explains:

“Candie is a business man who owns a plantation called Candie Land, and that’s where my wife ends up being. We have to get in good with Candie, by me playing a valet for Christoph’s character.”

With a character describes as “Richard Roundtree meets Clint Eastwood,” and Tarantino’s signature style of filmmaking, Foxx anticpates plenty of controversy, particularly because of the way the director approaches the cruelty of slavery. He tells EW:

“You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.”

Django Unchained is scheduled to open on December 25, 2012.
