Walt Disney Pictures has released two different trailers for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with barely a fleeting glimpse at Captain Jack Sparrow, but a marketing campaign that doesn’t feature your film’s protagonist can only get you so far. With that in mind, this action-packed trailer for the fifth installment of the blockbuster Pirates franchise features plenty of Johnny Depp – for better or worse.

The most interesting thing gleaned from this footage is the revelation that it’s a revenge tale: Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) has a personal vendetta against Jack Sparrow that he intends to settle, and he appears to be enlisting Jack’s former ally (and enemy) Captain Babossa (Geoffrey Rush) to achieve that goal. The origin of Salazar’s relationship to Jack also offers an intriguing glimpse of the legendary pirate’s early years, and I’m curious to see how much time we spend with Jack’s younger self.
Directed by Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will hit theaters on May 26.
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
