It’s been five years since the last installment of Disney’s hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and after a lengthy development cycle, the next entry is finally on its way. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is slated for a summer 2017 release date, and earlier this evening the studio pulled back to curtain to let audiences see what they’ve been working on.
Check out the first teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales below.
The clip runs less than two minutes, and doesn’t include a single familiar face – instead, it introduces us to Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew, ghost pirates that have recently escaped from the Devil’s Triangle. There appears to be some history between Salazar and Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), and he admonishes a young man (Brenton Thwaites) to carry a warning to his old nemesis.
Keeping Depp out of the trailer feels like a very wise decision by the marketing team at Disney, as his very public split with former wife Amber Heard has generated plenty of negative headlines, including allegations of physical abuse, drug addiction and alcohol dependency. Disney is no doubt hedging their bets on the franchise’s name recognition for now, and will likely try to minimize Depp’s involvement in promotional efforts until things settle down.
Directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki) and also starring Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will hit theaters on May 26, 2017.
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
