After crossing the $1 billion mark a week ago, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has continued its meteoric rise to the top of the all-time box office charts, and has now overtaken Return of the King to become the third-highest grossing film in history, with a haul of $1.14 billion. This is likely the final accolade this film will receive in its box office run, as the #2 film on the list, James Cameron’s Titanic, has a hefty lead of just over $70 million.  Looks like Harry and his friends will have to be content with taking…

Just last week, SyFy ordered six more episodes of Eureka to allow the producers to wrap up the show properly.  EW broke the news today that the deal has now fallen through, and the 12-episode fifth season will be the show’s last.  Here’s the official statement from SyFy: “After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on…

The sixth season of Dexter is quickly approaching, and while I’m mildly disappointed that it won’t be premiering on my birthday weekend like it has the past few years, I’m not about to let that affect my excitement for the return of my favorite serial killer.  Michael C. Hall recently spoke with IGN and shed some light on the motives behind Dexter’s new interest in religion: “It’s his son. I think it’s taking responsibility for the fact that his son needs more than to be shielded from Dexter’s dark passenger. He also will need something positive… It’s an awareness that…

Now that QuakeCon has come to an end, Bethesda Softworks and id Software have release a handful of new screens, as well as the box art, for their forthcoming post-apocalyptic shooter Rage. All photos below are courtesy of Game Informer. Rage hits shelves on October 4, 2011 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

With the release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic drawing ever closer, BioWare has revealed more details about the Jedi Consular class.  Check out the trailer below: I would love to be excited about this game, because I have no doubt in my mind that it will be awesome.  But aside from the face that I have so little time for gaming these days, I’ve never, ever enjoyed gaming on a PC.  I know Chris thinks that’s a blasphemous statement, and he’s probably already got his copy of the game pre-ordered.  But Chris hasn’t turned in his first…

Black Dynamite is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen.  If you disagree, you obviously haven’t seen it.  If you’ve seen it and still disagree, watch it again.  Seriously. Adult Swim is adapting the critically-acclaimed (and hilarious) film into a 30-minute animate series, and the pilot episode is not online for your viewing pleasure.  A brief synopsis: In this unaired pilot for the upcoming Black Dynamite series, our ass-kickin-friend-of-the-community Black Dynamite takes on his childhood mentor and surrogate father: That Frog Kurtis, a Puppet TV educator turned super villain!  Kung Fu has a new face. That face has a…

Joss Whedon is currently waist-deep in production on Marvel’s The Avengers, due out next summer, but that doesn’t mean that he’s not willing to stop and chat.  MTV managed to catch up with him recently, and he spoke very candidly about the film’s ongoing production: “I’m grateful everyday to be with those guys, especially Clark Gregg.  That guy, man crush! But I’m keeping it under control.  It’s great, he’s been weaving his way through every movie and I really get to play with him and have [him do] a lot of stuff.  There were things that during the writing, I…

Alright, look.  We already know that we’ll see a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  The movie has been a critical success and had an opened far above even the highest projections.  With the depth of mythology that exists in the Apes franchise, we’re bound to see a continuation of sorts.  And in an interview with Bleeding Cool, Rise director Rupert Wyatt seemed to have the same idea: “There’s so much we could do… The ideas I’ve had are all sorts of things, ranging from Full Metal Jacket with apes… you could start this story again eight…

More Hunger Games news today, as Lionsgate has just staked out a release date for the sequel, Catching Fire.  Despite the fact that The Hunger Games is still shooting and is more than six months away from release, Lionsgate is showing how much faith they have in the franchise by scheduling Catching Fire for release on November 22, 2013. I’ve got mixed feelings about this.  Sure, I’m a huge fan of the Hunger Games trilogy, and I certainly want to see all three volumes brought to life on the big screen.  But by the same token, we haven’t seen a…

UPDATE:  They may not have taken over the planet yet, but they’ve certainly taken over the box office.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes raked in $54 million in its opening weekend, almost $20 million higher than studio projections.  Fueled by impressive special effects, positive reviews, and very strong word of mouth, Rise easily captured the #1 spot at this weekend’s box office. After a surprisingly-strong opening weekend, The Smurfs managed to hang onto the #2 spot at the box office with $21 million, and Cowboys and Aliens saw a 57% drop, taking 3rd place with $15.7 million.  R-rated…
