In a shocking move, Disney has halted production on The Lone Ranger, which Gore Verbinksi was scheduled to direct with stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.  Deadline reports that the film’s budget was somewhere in the $250 million range, and that Disney is already struggling to control costs on John Carter and The Great and Powerful Oz, both of which are over the $200 million mark.  After unsuccessful attempts by the filmmakers to bring the budget down, Disney finally made the call to pull the plug. This seems like a knee-jerk reaction to me, and it may very well come…

It had to happen.  After the colossal failure of 2008’s The Love Guru, we haven’t see or heard much from Mike Myers (excluding voice work for the Shrek franchise).  Now HitFix is reporting that Myers is set to make his return to live-action films, having signed a deal to reprise his role as British secret agent Austin Powers. The franchise has laid dormant since 2002’s Goldmember, and currently there is no director attached, nor are there any details on the plot, but rest assured – Austin Powers 4 is headed our way.

Somehow, the upcoming remake of Footloose has managed to stay off my radar.  I’m sure I probably heard about it at one point or another, and maybe my brain just blocked out the memory so that I could be blissfully unaware.  But it’s happening, and soon, so I suppose there’s no more avoiding it now. Here’s the official trailer, courtesy of Yahoo: I’m sorry, but this looks beyond ridiculous.  Not to mention the fact that is completely, 100% unnecessary.

Hot on the heels of the news that Justin Lin had passed on the opportunity to direct Die Hard 5, The Hollywood Reporter says that he has now left the director’s chair for the Summit Entertainment remake of Highlander.  Lin has been attached to the project since 2009, but the success of Fast Five has resulted in Lin’s schedule filling up quickly.  Summit is positioning Highlander as their next tentpole franchise, with the hugely-successful Twilight series scheduled wrap up next year, and with Lin already committed to Fast and Furious 6 as well as the next Terminator film, he opted…

Thanks to Batman News, we’ve got new information regarding the introduction of a new vehicle in The Dark Knight Rises.  The image below has been popping up all over the place (click the thumbnail for a high-res version): There has been rampant speculation that this could turn out to be Nolan’s version of the Batwing (or Batplane, if you prefer).  And judging by this video from YouTube user subaruwrxfan, that seems to be a pretty accurate assumption:   With the amount of information that has already begun to leak, it makes me wonder how much more we’ll find out before…

The rumors are true: Game Informer is reporting that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is being developed for PC, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade, and could be released as early as Q1 2012.  Doug Lombardi, VP of merketing at Valve, release the following brief statement. “Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely mod became the most-played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999.  For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million…

The God of War Origins collection is on its way to the PS3, collecting Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta and remastering them both in gorgeous 1080p.  In addition, the games will now have full stereoscopic 3D support.  This short video, courtesy of The Official PlayStation Blog, shows a side-by-side comparison of the original PSP graphics against the new HD version.   It looks like Sony did a MUCH better job with this than last year’s God of War Collection.  Don’t get me wrong, I still played through both original God of War titles and loved the fresh coat…

EW has given us our first look at Leonardo DiCaprio in the forthcoming Clint Eastwood film J. Edgar.  Click the thumbnail for a larger version.  Along with the photo comes this brief synopsis: As America’s top cop for five decades, J. Edgar Hoover oversaw the creation of the FBI, helped popularize fingerprints and other forensic evidence, and wielded nearly unchecked authority to manipulate evidence and investigate supposed enemies of the state such as Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Now director Clint Eastwood is turning the tables, prying into Hoover’s life in a big-screen biopic that would doubtless…

The success of 2007’s Superbad opened the doors for a resurgence of raunchy, ridiculous buddy comedies.  Role Models, Stepbrothers, The Other Guys and I Love You, Man would probably never have happened if McLovin and friends hadn’t reaped a colossal $121 million at the domestic box office.  And of course, let’s not forget 2009’s The Hangover, which sent a firm message to Hollywood that there was a profit to be made from movies about a bunch of guys boozing it up and getting into incredibly implausible situations.  The latest offering from this genre is 30 Minutes or Less, which reunites…

More and more game studios seem to be adopting the “online pass” model, rewarding consumers who purchase their titles new at retail with a free code that gives them access to a game’s online features.  Rage developer id Software is taking a different approach, giving gamers some single-player incentives in the form of in-game “hatches” that can only be accessed via the code that comes bundled with new copies of the game. Speaking to Eurogamer, creative director Tim Willits detailed this approach: “If you bought the game new, [the hatches] would be open for you. You still have to download…
