Nick Robinson and Elle Fanning Eyed for ‘Ready Player One’

Earlier this year, we learned that Steven Spielberg would direct Ready Player One, the big screen adaptation of Ernest Cline’s celebrated sci-fi novel which follows a teenage boy on his adventures in a virtual realm known as The Oasis. The film won’t begin shooting until next year, but casting rumors for two of the major roles in the film have begun to circulate.

The first report comes from The Wrap: they’re claiming that Elle Fanning, Olivia Cooke and Lola Kirke are on the shortlist for the role of Art3mis, the in-game avatar of Samantha Cook. Two other actresses are also rumored to be under consideration, but no word yet on who they might be.

Cooke, who starred in Sundance favorite Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, also popped up on another shortlist earlier today: she’s apparently being looked at for a potential role in Star Wars: Episode VIII, and landing one role would likely put her out of the running for the other, as the shooting scheduled are likely to conflict.

Fanning, who was most recently seen in last year’s Maleficent, previously starred in the Spielberg-produced Super 8, so there’s a bit of familiarity there. And Kirke, who appeared in Gone Girl, has been getting rave reviews for her performance in Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America. All three actresses will likely audition for Spielberg once he wraps The BFG for Disney and finishes promotional duties for the Tom Hanks thriller Bridge of Spies.

Meanwhile, Variety’s Justin Kroll reports that Kings of Summer star Nick Robinson is “someone Spielberg likes” for the male lead – but no word yet on if the role would be that of Wade Watts, or his in-game persona, Parzival. Much like Fanning, Robinson has a bit of history with Spielberg – he produced the hugely successful Jurassic World, which featured Robinson in a pivotal role.

Ready Player One is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017. Warner Bros. declined to comment on the casting rumors.
