The Assassin’s Creed film has been in development for what feels like an eternity, but with production scheduled to begin soon, things are starting to come together, and Yahoo has released the first official photo of Michael Fassbender in costume as the main character, Callum Lynch.

Much like other films based on video games, Assassin’s Creed will be introducing new characters instead of adapting an existing storyline – which explains why the name Callum Lynch doesn’t match any of the protagonists from the game series. But based on this synopsis, it sounds like the film will be sticking closely to the established mythology:
Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.
Assassin’s Creed has had a very tumultuous journey to the big screen. Fassbender has been attached to produce and star in the film since 2012, and director Justin Kurzel came onboard in April of 2014. The project has gone through numerous rewrites and delays, but with cameras set to roll next Monday, things are finally moving forward. The production is expected to shoot in Malta, London and Spain before filming wraps, so expect plenty of exotic locales to be on display when the film hits the big screen.
With a supporting cast that includes Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Michael Kenneth Williams (12 Years a Slave), and Ariane Labed (Before Midnight), the long-awaited adaptation of Assassin’s Creed will hit theaters on December 21, 2016.
