Joss Whedon is in talks to write, direct, and produce a Batgirl solo film for Warner Bros. within the DCEU. Didn’t see that one coming, did ya?
Variety broke the news that the director known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and directing both Avengers films for Marvel is close to a deal to bring Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, to the big screen.
This mostly comes as a shock since Whedon was so entrenched in creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but eventually tapped out after Avengers: Age of Ultron. So to have his first major project after being Marvel’s guy for so long be for that company’s rival raises a few eyebrows, but the fact that it sounds like Whedon will have creative control in all aspects of the film can only mean good things for Batgirl.
The article also mentions the film will have “other characters from Gotham” so hopefully that means we’ll get more of J.K. Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon, who looks amazing in the Justice League trailer.
Batgirl will be the second solo female film from Warner Bros. DC Extended Universe with Wonder Woman bowing later this year. Whedon is no stranger to writing strong, funny lead female characters after creating a stable of shows led by ladies like Buffy, Dollhouse, Firefly etc. and he sounds like a perfect fit for Batgirl.
So for fans of the DCEU, if this comes to pass, how do you think Whedon’s Batgirl will fit into the current universe of Man of Steel, BvS, Justice League, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman? Will Batgirl be older, having already existed with Affleck’s Batman in Gotham? Is she young and into social media like the new incarnation in the comics? Who would you cast?
