Apparently that social media video Ben Affleck posted of Deathstroke a week or two back wasn’t just for a Justice League cameo. DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns, the man with all the titles, revealed to The Wall Street Journal that True Blood actor Joe Manganiello will play Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s first solo Batman film.
Nothing screams superhero scoop like The Wall Street Journal, right? However, Johns would not reveal whether Deathstroke would make that rumored cameo in Justice League, which is currently filming in London. Deathstroke was most recently played live-action by Manu Bennett in the first two seasons of Arrow.
Manganiello is actually an inspired choice for the role. He’s tall, muscle-bound, and has the salt and pepper hair associated with the anti-hero badass – but most importantly, the actor has charisma. He might not bring the A-List name recognition of someone like Brad Pitt, but having Affleck’s name attached allows a lesser-known actor like Manganiello really bring it as the bounty hunter assassin.
A bit of trivia on Manganiello himself: he’s a huge DC Comics fan and has been trying to get into a role in their franchises for years now. He’s a big Superman fan and has auditioned multiple times for the role in both Bryan Singer’s and Zack’s Snyder’s films. But I feel like Deathstroke is the right character for him to take, and hopefully he nails it and gets to pop-up all around the DC Extended Universe.
Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck are currently writing the Batman solo film, but no release date is currently attached.
