Jose Padilha’s Robocop remake is shaping up quite nicely in the casting department, with Joel Kinnaman in the title role and a supporting cast that includes Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, and Samuel L. Jackson. Now it looks like the production may have found a nemesis for Officer Alex Murphy, with Variety reporting that House, M.D. star Hugh Laurie has entered into negotiations to play the film’s villain.
The character is described as the wealthy CEO of the company that funds Murphy’s transformation into the titular cyborg, which sounds like the Dick Jones character portrayed by Ronny Cox in the original film. Laurie’s Golden Globe-winning performance as the smarmy, arrogant Gregory House has given him plenty of time to prepare for a role like this, and his addition to the cast earns a solid thumbs-up.
Robocop officially begins production this summer, and is slated for release on August 9, 2013.
