Yesterday marked our first official look at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the legendary Hercules, as seen in the upcoming film of the same name. We promised you a trailer for the film would be forthcoming, and we certainly like to keep our promises around here, so let’s just cut the chatter and get right to it, shall we?
I’m not even going to attempt to hide my excitement for this one. First of all, from a sheer physical standpoint, there’s no one in Hollywood better equipped to play Hercules than The Rock. When you calculate his natural charisma and his ability to open a film, this becomes a no-brainer.
Secondly, while I would never consider myself a fan of director Brett Ratner, I’ll admit that the action and the production design look pretty great. If the entire movie was comprised of The Rock fighting lions and hydras and so forth, I’d buy my ticket right now. But the synopsis indicates that there’s much more going on here than just sword-swinging and ass-kicking.
Third, the trailer features the melodious voice of Ian McShane, so how can you go wrong? Just let him narrate everything from now on, okay guys?
Hercules hits theaters on July 25.
Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend…
Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.
