One of the most buzzed-about selections at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival has been Free Fire, director Ben Wheatley’s follow-up to the divisive dystopian thriller High Rise. This time, Wheatley is eschewing the wild imagery and commentary on class warfare in favor of a far simpler premise: two groups of criminals meet in a warehouse for an arms exchange, and all hell breaks loose.
Nearly the entire film takes place in this setting, with Wheatley creating what essentially amounts to a feature-length gun battle that plays out mostly in real time. By all accounts, it’s an exciting and hilarious 90-minute romp, with an amazing cast that includes Oscar winner Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley and plenty more.

Reviews for Free Fire have been positive so far, but let’s hope the film can maintain that buzz for the long haul – A24 has picked up Free Fire for distribution, but the film won’t be making its way to theaters until sometime in 2017, so those of us who aren’t in Toronto will have to wait until next year to see what all the hype is about.
