Whether fanboys and purists like it or not, a remake of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead is heading our way. I’ve maintained a fairly neutral attitude toward the project since it was announced – I certainly wasn’t thrilled with the idea, but I also don’t count myself among those who automatically assume that all remakes are an abomination. And if the NSFW footage below is any indication, this could very well be one of the better ones. Thanks to IGN for the trailer.
In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
Any and all reservations I had about this remake just went right out the window. It’s easy to see why audiences at New York Comic Con loved their first look at director Fede Alvarez’s vision: this has such an awesome, old-school horror vibe to it, and with the stamp of approval from Raimi, as well as a ringing endorsement from Bruce Campbell, I’m firmly on board for this one.
Evil Dead opens on April 12, 2013.
