I’ve been intrigued by the thought of Guy Ritchie offering up a new take on the King Arthur legend, and with Warner Bros. plotting the adventure as a jumping-off point for a franchise that will span six volumes, it seems like there’s plenty of confidence behind the project.
So it was with great anticipation that I sat in Hall H yesterday at Comic-Con to view the first trailer for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Before I go any further, you should probably check it out for yourself.
I have absolutely no idea how to feel about this. I had expected Ritchie to adapt his style in order to better serve the narrative, but based on this trailer it seems like he’s done the opposite. There’s very little here that even remotely resembles the Arthur of legend, and my enthusiasm for this film has taken a pretty big hit.
That being said, I’m not writing it off yet. I think Charlie Hunnam is a great actor, and it should be fun to watch Jude Law play a villainous warlock. I’m just crossing my fingers that King Arthur has a bit more to offer than what we’re seeing here, otherwise Warner Bros. can kiss those franchise dreams goodbye.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will open on March 24, 2017.
Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Starring Charlie Hunnam in the title role, the film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne.
When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.
