We got our first look at Blade Runner 2049 back in December, when an all-too-brief teaser trailer reintroduced audiences to Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), the character he played more than 30 years ago in Ridley Scott’s original neon-soaked sci-fi tale. Now it’s time to meet his younger counterpart, Officer K (Ryan Gosling) in the film’s first full-length trailer.
Arrival director Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins are obviously taking an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to updating the Blade Runner universe for today’s moviegoing crowd, and the resulting aesthetic – which looks like a shinier, glossier version of this film’s predecessor – is about as perfect as we could expect.
The idea of a Blade Runner sequel has always felt somewhat dubious, but so far everything has looked spectacular – let’s just hope the story will be able to live up to the promise of these stunning visuals.
Blade Runner 2049 will hit theaters on October 6.
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
