It’s been more than five months since we got our look at the first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, the hugely popular videogame franchise from Ubisoft. The film stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch, descended from an ancient order of Assassins and able to relive the experiences of his 15th-century ancestor, Aguilar, using “genetic memories” unlocked by a mysterious device called the Animus.
With the film’s December release date on the horizon, the studio has released a new trailer for Assassin’s Creed. You can check it out below.
Much like the first trailer, this footage seems to indicate that director Justin Kurzel – who previously worked with Fassbender on Macbeth – has managed to capture the acrobatic action that has long been a trademark of the gaming franchise. But I’m still not sold on the tone here- maybe it’s the choice of music, which also generated a negative response in the previous trailer.
At any rate, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether or not Fassbender’s foray into the videogame world will bear fruit. With a support cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson, Assassin’s Creed will hit theaters on December 21.
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
