While the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 seems to indicate the film will lay plenty of groundwork for a much larger universe, there’s a key element of that universe that may be missing by the time Sony gets to their fourth installment: Andrew Garfield. Sony has already locked down release dates for two more follow-ups, but it seems Garfield is only confirmed for the next one.
Speaking to Yahoo Movies UK, Garfield was asked about the fourth film, and said “That’s all news to me. I’m under contract for another one after this. As far as a fourth one… that’s not anything to do with me.”
There were rumors over the summer that Amazing Spider-Man 4 might be less about the wall-crawler himself and more about the other characters in the universe, so that may have something to do with it. But as the face of the franchise, it seems highly unlikely that Garfield wouldn’t be involved with the film in some capacity. The smart money is on contract negotiations being sorted out long before this becomes an issue.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
