“Game of Thrones” expected for lengthy run.

Fans of the HBO medieval fantasy drama Game of Thrones can rest easy – with huge ratings, Emmy nominations, and season 2 already in production, it’s safe to say that the show isn’t going anywhere for a long time.  The series, based on A Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin, completed its first season earlier this year.  Currently, Martin has published five books in the series, and is planning two more entries.  HBO remains cautiously optimistic about keeping the show on the air long enough for Martin to complete the journey.  President of programming Michael Lombardo had this to say:

“We told George we’d go as long as he kept writing.  I don’t know where the show for us ends as opposed to the books… I think the challenge for us is always, how long do the creators want to stay with the show? Dan and David have signed on for a couple of years and we’re going to have those conversations with them every couple years.

Game of Thrones will return to HBO for a second season in 2012.
